Once you've decided that a custom Sumerset
Houseboat from The Harbor may be right for you, here's our 10-point checklist we use to take your boat from dream
to reality...
New Page 1 STEP 1 - Discovery Tour Reviewing pictures and plans at a conference table is certainly nice, but nothing compares to actually touring, touching and comparing different floorplans and amenities on existing Sumersets. There are more than 20 late model (2005 and newer) custom Sumerset's on Table Rock Lake and we'll tour as many as we need to get ideas about space, colors, decor, features and functions before we sit down to start your floorplan.
New Page 1 STEP 2 - Floorplan Development At this stage, we'll blend all the best ideas to develop a custom floorplan which gets converted to CAD (Computer Assisted Design) format. The CAD design will become a work in progress. We'll be able to change walls, doors and features until we get it just right. Sumerset Houseboats is the industry leader in both CAD design and ongoing product engineering, insuring that your boat will not only be beautiful but will have numerous quality and safety features built right into the design.
New Page 1 STEP 3 - Formal Pricing Although our houseboat specialists will be able to provide you some 'ballpark' pricing during Steps 1 & 2 to keep your budget in mind, each boat is custom priced at headquarters using a computerized up-to-date pricing system. The pricing model takes into account market prices on construction materials and keeps each boat as competitively priced as possible. During this phase, we may add and delete various items and features to meet our target pricing goal. As your authorized Sumerset experts, our mission will be to make sure that you are getting the most value for your money. The formal pricing will be good for up to 30 days as you make your decision.
New Page 1 STEP 4 - Purchase Agreement Once we've settled on the perfect floorplan and the final pricing is in order, we'll convert our documents into a Purchase Agreement with The Harbor and Build Contract with Sumerset Houseboats. At this point, a 20% deposit is due from the customer for the boat to be added to the production schedule. As an exclusive dealer, The Harbor commits to various production slots throughout the year and your boat will move into our next available slot. Once we've signed the purchase agreement and deposit, we'll set an appointment to visit the plant to pick out the decor for your new boat!
New Page 1 STEP 5 - Design Session Prior to starting the actual construction of your new boat, we'll travel to Somerset, KY to visit the headquarters and production facilities of Sumerset Houseboats. The Harbor will make all the travel arrangements. We'll tour the plant and then meet with your boat's Project Manager and Design Specialist who will lead us through the design and decor process. The resources, materials and design options available are endless. Don't worry, however, we'll come prepared with ideas and samples, ready to take the next step in turning your dream into reality. Typically this proves to be one of the most exciting days in the life of your new boat!
New Page 1 STEP 6 - Construction Actual construction of your boat begins after we've completed our design session. The CAD department works up a complete engineering plan of the electrical systems, HVAC, plumbing and mechanical systems. Construction takes approximately 14 weeks and you'll be kept up to date with daily production photos of your boat. You'll see the progress on your boat every day via Sumerset's website as your dreamboat takes shape. In addition, The Harbor monitors the progress of your boat with our project manager and in person during our frequent plant visits.
New Page 1 STEP 7 - Final Finish and Testing Once construction is complete, your boat will move into a quality control process where systems are tested and checked, workmanship is inspected and your boat is actually 'launched' into the test lake at the Sumerset factory. Sumerset has the only onsite test lake of any houseboat manufacturer. At this point, owners are invited for an optional final inspection.
New Page 1 STEP 8 - Delivery & Launch Sumerset shrink-wraps each boat prior to delivery, and typically each boat arrives in Missouri or Arkansas 2 days after leaving the plant in Kentucky. Each trip is different and there is a maze of permits, escorts and inspections for each boat delivered. Sumerset Transportation takes care of everything and makes the whole delivery process seamless. Once the boat arrives at our launch facility, the top- notch delivery crew works an additional day or two to reattach the party top, arch, helm and roof top bar. After that, she's ready to launch and we climb aboard for the captain to take the wheel as the Sumerset crew backs her into the water. We always check for the plug!
New Page 1 STEP 9 - Captain's Lessons Once your boat is in it's new slip and all the systems are double checked once again, the fun really begins. As a part of The Harbor's custom delivery process, we review each and every system and process with you and your family to make sure you understand how your boat works. Then, we toss the lines and take her out onto the lake to teach you how to drive your new boat. Today's houseboats are easy to drive, especially with bow and stern thrusters. We'll have you parking and pivoting your boat in no time. Of course, the time we commit to you in practicing your skills is unlimited and we'll turn you loose only when you're comfortable.
New Page 1 STEP 10 - The Harbor Experience Unlike most dealers who may wave goodbye as you drive off the lot with your new boat, when you buy a boat from The Harbor, our relationship just begins. Many of our customers choose to moor their new boat at one of our marinas on Table Rock Lake. At both The Harbor Marina and State Park Marina, a full complement of services is at your disposal. The Harbor takes care of all of your warranty needs on your new Sumerset through the 5-year Sumerset Secure Warranty program. We work hard to to make each custom boat a fair, fun experience and we invite you to ask our current customers how we are doing.
